My name is Shaun Gilyard, and I’m a junior at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter MN. Through the Career Development Center at Gustavus I was able to find the Economic Development Internship with the City of Isanti. As an economics major, I found myself very interested in the government’s role within the community as well as its function within society. Through this Internship at Isanti I was able to experience firsthand local government involvement within its community. As the Economic Development Intern, I was able to see how the City works with local businesses to bring in jobs as well as economic growth to its community. I was also given the opportunity to learn about other parts of local government such as community development and the property tax system.
This internship not only gave me an understanding of government functionality, it also gave me the opportunity of improving my skills within the workplace. I was able to learn how to conduct business in a professional work environment, as well as apply the skills I’ve learned from my college studies and previous work experience towards a career field I look forward to pursuing. I am very thankful to the City of Isanti for giving me this opportunity to experience local government, which has helped me determine my career path as well as having helped me become a better employee altogether.
