Katie Danielzuk recently completed an internship with the City of Burnsville. This is what she had to say about the experience.
Working over the summer as an intern with the City of Burnsville has given me the best internship experience I’ve had yet. Not only was I able to apply skills I had learned in the classroom, but I learned a lot more from the experience of being in the workplace. While working in the Community Development department, I was able to get a mix of planning experience and was introduced to economic development practices.
Some of the experiences I found to be the most valuable were business visits that we conducted as part of Grow MN. Learning about connecting with the community and small, local businesses taught me a lot about business retention and economic development within the local economy. Additionally, being presented with the opportunity to research and present proposed zoning ordinance changes offered insight into the planning side of community development.
The Burnsville Community Development department did a fantastic job at making sure I was included on various types of project and staff meetings, becoming involved with both long-term and short-term projects, and welcoming me in to help me learn as much as possible this summer about working in local government.
